THE dance of the 1930’s & 40’s Lindy Hop is a dance style which emerged in the dance halls of New York.
Moves were invented then copied giving rise to famous ‘battles’ of the dancers. By the outbreak of WWII music and dancing were among the main forms of entertainment. With America’s entry into the war in 1941 and the celebration of all things American, ‘swing’ became the dominant form of popular music. The G. I.’s posted in Britain brought Lindy Hop (aka jitterbug) with them and the sound track and dance style of the 40’s generation had arrived.
Lindy Hop is danced with a partner, usually (although by no means always) a male and a female. It can be danced to most tempos using moves from slow and lazy to fast and furious. There is no set routine to the dance, it is composed of short moves which allows the dance to be improvised and interpreted to fit the music.
