For example, today I learnt about the 1981 Irish hunger strike which was recently brought to public attention again in the film ‘Hunger’ by Steve McQueen. The Irish hunger strike came at the culmination of a five-year protest held by Irish republican prisoners in Northern Ireland during The Troubles. In 1976 the British government withdrew SCS (Special Category Status) for convicted paramilitary prisoners which led to a blanket protest by prisoners. After a number of attacks on the republican prisoners upon leaving their cells, they began the dirty protest in which they refused to wash.
The hunger strike prompted media attention from around the world making it effectively into a showdown between Members of Parliament and the prisoners. Ten prisoners starved themselves to death before the strike was called off. Sands’ funeral was attended by 100,000 people!
